Kerry, born in West Yorkshire in 1971, has been a full-time freelance French to English translator since 2000. After graduating with a BSc in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science from Edinburgh University in 1993, he spent several years working as a musician in north-east France. On his return to Britain, he worked as a database analyst and programmer for a magazine publisher, before deciding to make the most of his language skills as a translator. He sat the Institute of Linguists' Intermediate Diploma in French, obtaining distinctions in all three papers, and is now an Associate member of the Institute. He lives with his wife and two daughters on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales.
Jennifer graduated from the University of Michigan in 1995 with a B.A. in both French and Political Science. She began translating as a freelancer from French and Spanish into English in 1999 after relocating from her native Michigan to the Dominican Republic, where she continues to live with her husband and two children. Jennifer specializes in the fields of agriculture (including food science and plant biotech), politics and development, tourism, and the arts. She also routinely proofreads the English of non-native speakers working in these areas. She has remained agile in her working languages through extended residence in Québec, France, and the Dominican Republic. She prefers a multilingual, multicultural workplace, having also worked in refugee resettlement and as a teacher of English in the French Lycée in Santo Domingo. Jennifer's strengths as a translator lie in her respect for both the art and science of intercultural communication and in her resourceful and collaborative nature.
Jeremy is a freelance
translator based in Manchester, in the United Kingdom. He was born in
1975 and holds a degree in modern languages and translation from the
University of Salford. He translates from both French and Spanish into
English.
Having left the UK after his studies to work in language teaching and
translation positions in the Canary Islands and in Paris, he returned
to his native British Isles in order to pursue his freelance
activities. He specialises in legal, financial and IT translations, but
in his spare time prefers to devote himself to the creative arts,
especially photography and music. He is a percussionist with a regional
orchestra and plays the drums in various small jazz and new music
ensembles.
He is a keen cook and would like to see (and translate!) more
specialist cookery books from foreign authors on the shelves of British
bookshops. When pressed, he might admit that this would be more for his
own culinary pleasure than for professional development.
Jeremy is an active member of two regional translators' associations in
the UK and has been a freelancer since 2003. Although he spends rather
too much of his time working, he also manages to find the time to
travel to the European continent regularly, and as well as this
volunteers as a mentor to assist asylum seekers adjusting to life in
Britain.
Alexandra has been
active professionally as a translator since 2002, and has been working
on a full-time freelance basis since Spring/Summer 2004. A native
English speaker translating from both French and German, after
graduating with a Master’s Degree in Translation she underwent
practical training with a major international company in France for one
year and is now based in Germany. She has so far translated an
extremely varied mixture of business and industrial documents,
contracts, publicity materials, technical user manuals, websites and
much more. Areas include advertising / marketing, the arts, tourism,
sports events, food labelling, business and commerce, human resources
and industrial health and safety.
Tony
has been working as a full-time French to English translator for the
last 10 years, ever since moving to live in rural France. He
specializes in technical translations covering various fields, along
with material of a more general commerical nature, including
real-estate and tourism.
Previous to this, his career path took him through various fields,
providing valuable professional insights across numerous domains.
Initially an electronics technician, he later worked as a lecturer in
Higher Education in the UK, as well as a technical consultant and
freelance Film & TV technician.
Besides a good grounding in electrical and electronic engineering (with
special knowledge in the fields of film, TV, theatre and cinema [former
member of the British Kinematograph, Film & TV Society]; radio and
TV engineering; EMC [electromagnetic compatibility]; sound and
lighting), he also has background knowledge in general engineering and
related technical/scientific fields.
An experienced technical writer (training material and manuals), he is
also used to writing and editing for performance, as well as more
weighty administrative documents (project proposals, tenders etc.).
Regular customers (who cannot be named for reasons of commercial
confidentiality) include major national and international players in
finance, telecoms, defence, civil aeronautics, manufacturing…, as well
as the prestige French property magazine “Maisons de France”.
Stephanie is a freelance translator (French to UK English), copy-editor and proofreader.
As part of her BA in French, she spent a year studying French in Quebec. After gaining her MA in Translating in the UK, she worked for 3 years as a technical translator in France, where she translated telecommunications and IT documents for major French companies.
She is also an experienced copy-editor and proofreader, having worked for 2 years for a global medical communications agency in the UK, editing documents and checking typeset pages for the main pharmaceutical companies.
Stephanie has worked on texts and websites for major companies and institutions including Alcatel, AstraZeneca, Caisse dEpargne, Cridit Suisse, Ericsson, the Finnish Ministry of the Environment, France Tilicom, GSK, Hitachi, Honda, Pfizer, Peugeot and Renault. While she specialises in telecommunications, she has translated documents on a wide range of topics, including education, human resources, local government, marketing, sport and tourism.
She has a particularly good eye for detail, and places great emphasis on quality and consistency. She is a member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting.
Stephen was born in southern England in 1968 and since secondary school has made the study and use of languages a major part of both his professional and private life. After graduating in Modern Languages at the Polytechnic of Central London in 1991, he worked variously for a UK publishing house and two financial institutions before returning to the Polytechnic of Central London, which had since been renamed the University of Westminster, to undertake a Master of Arts degree in Technical and Specialised Translation. He translates from both French and German into British English.
Stephen has translated and proofread a variety of documents, ranging from texts on insulin therapy, contracts, press releases and marketing material to company presentations, individual CVs and defence policy documents. He has also translated items of sports journalism, which were subsequently published in book format in 2004 by Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London.
He enjoys maintaining close contact with all his clients and is available for translation projects at any time of day, including weekends (and will also work through the night when an unexpected translation is urgently needed). Reliability, confidentiality and a friendly, professional approach to work and client relations are his guiding principles.
Lloyd is a well-travelled native English speaker with a flair for French and Spanish and a special interest in Hispanic and Francophone culture and politics. He graduated in 2005 with a BA, 1st Class Honours Degree in French and Spanish from the University of Leeds, England, and has recently embarked on a career in translation.
His passion for languages took root during a number of school exchanges in France and Spain. This interest deepened when, as part of his BA degree in Modern Languages, he spent a few months studying at a specialist language school in France and a year working at a university in Chile for the British Council as an English Language teacher. Following the completion of his BA degree, Lloyd yearned to add one more language to his name, and so he moved to Shanghai, China to experience the oriental way of life and to learn Mandarin Chinese.
However, his attachment to the Latin lifestyle and the Spanish language was so great, that he has recently moved back to Chile in order to gain experience in this field working as an associate of "BeTranslated's" coordinator for Latin America, Claudia Iglesias.
Previously he worked as a sport's report journalist and translator for the Press Association in England. This work involved compiling international football reports for key British newspapers, websites and UEFA and FIFA and correspondence with colleagues across the globe in French and Spanish.
Throughout his studies he gained a great deal of experience translating documents on a wide range of subjects, particularly on politics, education, literature, economics and tourism.
